Welcome to the official web site of the Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity at the University of Illinois. We are located on the Corner of 4th and Daniel in Champaign, IL.

Organization facts

Fun Fact: Chief Illiniwek, the symbol of the University of Illinois, has been an Alpha Kappa Lambda brother for the past six years. John Madigan (Class of 2000) portrayed the Chief from 1998 until 2000, and was succeeded by Matt Veronie (Class of 2002). The last person to portray chief Illiniwek four our university was also an Alpha Kappa Lambda brother Dan Maloney (Class of 2004)

The brothers of Alpha Kappa Lambda are involved in many campus activities. A short sample includes some of the strongest student organizations on campus: Illinois Lacrosse, Mock Trial, Campus Honors Program, Atius-Sachem, Association for Computing Machinery, American Society of Chemical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Illini Meat Judging Team, International Illini, Reserve Officer Training Corps, Marching Illini, and Study Abroad. This is by no means meant to be an exhaustive list, but rather an introduction into some of our brothers' interests and involvement.

If you look in the dictionary to see how to spell "philanthropy," you will find that it is spelled "Alpha Kappa Lambda." Everyone knows that there are times in college when you have so much work to do that it seems unbearable. That's why brothers in Alpha Kappa Lambda like to "get away" by taking part in philanthropy events. The good feelings that come forth from helping out are endless. Our own annual philanthropy is also a time that brothers greatly anticipate.

One of the founding Five Ideals of Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity is Scholarship. Academics are taken very seriously in our house. Between our driven members and our pledge scholarship program, Alpha Kappa Lambda is consistently among the top of all fraternities in active and pledge GPA. Recently, a room in our house was converted to serve strictly as a study room, where brothers can engage in quiet study without distraction. During pledgeship, future members engage in study hours where they can either study alone, with their pledge brothers, or receive help from active members. Each pledge is paired with an active member of the fraternity based upon major during the beginning of pledgeship. The brother serves as an academic mentor to the pledge and helps the pledge with their studies as well as guides the pledge in their future academic endeavors. Alpha Kappa Lambda is committed to providing its future and current members all available opportunities to nurture academic growth!

Alpha Kappa Lambda is not just a fraternity of brotherhood. We take pride in the service that we provide to our community. Many brothers in AKL have generously donated their time and efforts to local charities and community events. One example pertains to the Champaign Boys and Girls Club, where we recently built a haunted house for Halloween. In addition to constructing the haunted house, we even had brothers act as scarrrrrrry villains inside to haunt as much as we could! You can imagine the smile on the children's faces! The brothers of Alpha Kappa Lambda are proud to provide whatever service we can to our community.

Alpha Kappa Lambda has a strong social calendar. Every semester we have a combination of brotherhood events and exchanges with sororities. Brotherhood events are great times in which we do what AKLs do best: have fun! Exchanges are a great way to get acquainted with many of the sorority women on campus. Often, exchanges are themed, providing for a time to have fun and lighten the mood. Besides these scheduled events, the brothers of Alpha Kappa Lambda enjoy spending time together in a less organized manner, whether frequenting campus hot-spots or just hanging out at the house for a friendly game of cards.

Alpha Kappa Lambda has a strong history with the University of Illinois intramural sports program. Our members annually participate in all of the different sports offered, including football, basketball, softball, broomball, and volleyball. The intramural programs are an important way to build bonds between members and give us a chance to compete against other fraternities on campus. Intramurals also mix fun and recreation with the everyday rigors of the college experience. The teams are open to all that wish to play, and pledges are encouraged to join the teams as a great way to meet members of the house.

Chapter facts
In 1921, a group of over seventy University of Illinois students known as the Bushnell Guild decided to become a part of the national Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity. The original fraternity house was located on the corner of Fifth and Daniel Street in Champaign. In 1925, a new house was built on the corner of Fourth and Daniel; this house is the house we live in today. A large addition was built in the late 1960s. Today, the Gamma Chapter is the oldest continuing Alpha Kappa Lambda chapter in the nation, and one of the oldest fraternities on the University of Illinois campus. Our fraternity remains one of the closest houses to the Main Quad.

Many Alpha Kappa Lambda alumni have left their mark on the University of Illinois campus. Kendrick C. Babcock, Eugene Davenport, Arnold Lundgren, and Sydney Fund Townsend were all founding members of the Gamma Chapter in 1921, and there are still residence halls and University buildings named for them today. Irving Lee Dillard, a 1924 Gamma initiate, served on General Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff during World War II and was later elected to the University of Illinois Board of Trustees in 1960. Other Gamma alumni have gone on to work for and contribute to the University in several ways. Nationally, Alpha Kappa Lambda maintains a strong network of relations between active brothers and alumni. As our slogan goes, membership in AKL is truly an "Affiliation Kindled for Life."

Alpha Kappa Lambda charges $3350 per semester for brothers living in the house. We try to keep costs notably less than the University Residence Halls.

Alpha Kappa Lambda is currently going under a major renovation process in which the actives will not be able to live in our house for the 2008-2009 school year. However, we all look forward to having a gorgeous and completely renovated house for the 2009-2010 school year.
